Mayor John Gunter has lived in Cape Coral since 2007. He was appointed to Mayor of Cape Coral in 2021. He was elected Mayor November 2022. He also was elected for District 1 Councilmember 2017.

Mayor John Gunter has been appointed President of the Southwest Florida League of Cities, effective July 24, 2025. The League represents 12 cities across Charlotte, Collier, Hendry, and Lee Counties—advocating for local decision-making and working to improve quality of life in our region.
